A New Start for OzKleen
Tom Quinn and his business partner buy OzKleen, a small business selling around 100 products, mostly in bulk, and open a shop in Beenleigh.
We're OzKleen, an Australian family business that has been making cleaning products in Queensland since 1995. You probably know us for Shower Power. What you might not know is that it started with a small shop in Beenleigh, a family willing to back a struggling business, and a new citrus bathroom cleaner that customers wouldn't stop talking about.
Today, we still make every OzKleen product at our factory in Ormeau.
1995
In 1995, Tom Quinn and his business partner bought OzKleen. It was a small, struggling business with around 100 products, most of them sold in bulk. Tom opened a shop in Beenleigh to sell them, with products made at a small factory in Yatala.
The new owners brought in an industrial chemist to rework the range, and what really stood out was that people wanted a better bathroom cleaner. Tom's son Peter, then 24, took it on, working on a citrus-based formula without harsh chemicals like chlorine (common for the time). That cleaner became Shower Power.
At first, Shower Power was only sold in bulk. Then customers at the Beenleigh shop started coming back to tell Tom how well it worked, so he put it into 750mL bottles.
Before long, people were driving more than 50 kilometres to pick one up!
In the early days, we filled and labelled every bottle of Shower Power by hand from small tanks, and keeping up with demand was a daily challenge. So Peter designed his own automated bottling machine, which he later patented.
We moved to our Ormeau site in 2005, where we make everything we sell. We formulate, mix, fill and pack on site, with zero overseas manufacturing.
Being our own manufacturer means we can test, tweak, and improve our formulas ourselves, and we can make changes here when needed.
“Look, I don’t accept failure, and I certainly don't take defeat lying down. If a formula isn't performing up to scratch, you don't throw your hands up-you pivot, you look deeper, and you dig into the science until you uncover the right answer. For us at OzKleen, our whole point of difference is that we refuse to rely on the harsh, nasty chemicals the big multinationals use. We went back to nature and built our products on plant-based materials. That means it’s completely safe for the blokes and ladies making it on our factory floor, safe for the families using it in their homes, and safe for the planet. That's the innovation we pride ourselves on-making something that works like magic, without compromising on safety.”
OzKleen is owned and run by the Quinn family, now across two generations. Tom Quinn is our Chairman, and Mark and Peter Quinn lead the business day-to-day.
Behind them is a team of people across the lab, production, warehouse and office, most of them locals.
"Ozkleen has been a significant part of my working life for many years, providing invaluable experience, knowledge, and lifelong friendships along the way. I’ve always been incredibly proud of Ozkleen’s products, the quality they represent, and what the business stands for. It’s been an invaluable journey, both personally and professionally, and a real privilege to be part of a company with such great products and to see the positive difference they make. I’m truly grateful for the journey, the experiences, and the wonderful people who have been part of it."
